Matters of Conscience

My 11-year-old daughter is a big anti-fur girl. Her reasoning: there are plenty of other natural and synthetic materials available for clothing in this day and age, so why kill an animal for no good reason?

Imagine her dismay when, just this morning, she discovered that the kitten knick-knack her best friend recently gave to her is covered with [not faux] rabbit fur.

My dd would totally sympathize with her. She's of the 'animals DO have feelings, mom!'school of thought and has been vegetarian since June last year.

Oh dear, I'm so sorry. As a vegan, I can totally relate. It's hard when someone who has the best intentions gives you something that you have a moral issue with (my mum still buys me wool and silk things...)

My advice (if you want it!) is to quietly let her parents know about her beliefs, so future gifts can be worked around it. Remind her that the friendship means more than any present she could give. Good luck!

I feel so bad for your girl. I hate those "stuffed animals"...I find them to be so creepy. I rank them right up there with dearly departed pet that makes a stop at the taxidermist and is never able to depart.....

My ex-boyfriend's father was a hunter.. they had lots of literal stuffed animals, deer heads, birds... yuckk. I can sympathize with your daughter!

I can see how that would be a little creepy.
